Viaduct Harbour was the subject of an intense focus on a quality outcome. From the ultimate investor Tramco to the project management of the overall master plan led by Nigel McKenna, the team worked collaboratively with all key stakeholders including both council and government. A vision was shared and an equal investment was made in infrastructure and the public realm. Nigel jointly led what is today referred to as the Maritime Square commercial development. Nigel undertook and led from concept to completion of the Sebel/Quay waterfront mixed use project and the $300 million Lighter Quay project.

The overall results today speak for themselves. But at the time the aspirations were considered lofty and many challenged the vision and the level of investment required. Projects such as the waterfront dining precinct were designed, tenanted and built against a sea of doubt and challenges. Working with and retaining existing buildings, strengthening seawalls, creating new esplanade walkways, contamination, asbestos and seismic problems all had to be overcome. Against this backdrop a world class waterfront precinct was created that is now 15 years later still as successful as the day it opened. There are many similarities between the Viaduct and the Civic Administration Building and many issues we dealt with in the Viaduct apply equally today to parts of the Aotea Precinct.
